Introduction
The Aerosion Ltd. disintegrator is a patent pending device
for reducing friable materials to small particles. Reduction
is accomplished by launching pieces of material to be disintegrated
at a closing target with sufficient velocity to cause the
material to break into fine powder. Apparatus design allows
for very high closing velocities between the material to
ground and the teeth on the grinding wheel, thereby producing
very fine powders. In most applications, fine particles
are drawn off the top of the disintegrator and collected
with a cyclone.
Energy Efficiency
The throwing wheel is mounted inside the grinding wheel
and spins in the opposing direction. A specially designed
high efficiency motor provided by SKF Precision Equipment
drives each wheel. The energy produced by the drive motors
is applied directly to the reduction of the material to
be ground. As a result, the Aerosion disintegrator uses
much less energy than a jet mill and less than 60% of the
energy of a ball mill or roller mill in the production of
ultra fine ground particles.
Classification
In applications where the powder produced must be classified
to a tight size specification, the first stage classification
is accomplished in the disintegrator body. Fine material
is drawn out the top of the disintegrator and oversize material
drops out of the bottom of the disintegrator chamber. Subsequent
classification can be very effectively achieved by using
cyclones to drop oversized particles out of the powder/air
stream or by using a conventional spin rotor classifier.
Wear
The disintegrator is designed to focus the impact of material
on the grinding teeth and rails of the throwing wheel. These
surfaces are made of wear resistant materials such as ceramics
to increase life of the wear parts and reduce contamination
of the finished product. The disintegrator is designed for
rapid servicing and quick replacement of grinding surfaces.
Controlled Grinding
Each motor is powered with a variable speed electronic
motor control so the closing velocity of the material to
be ground with the grinding tooth can be controlled. Particle
size is controlled by adjusting the speed of the spinning
grinding and throwing wheels. Higher speeds produce smaller
size particles. The Aerosion disintegrator throwing and
grinding wheel can be operated at very high speeds to produce
very small particles in the micron and submicron range.
Easy Installation
The Aerosion disintegrator is torque and vibration free,
thereby reducing the need for special foundations and supports.
In most cases the grinder can be set on a standard concrete
floor in a 6'x6' space.
Applications
The Aerosion disintegrator is in use producing finely ground
zeolites and cement for the use in oil production. The fine
particle size, combined with low operating and capital costs
make the disintegrator uniquely suited for the application.
The low cost of grinding material to fine powders and the
ability to control particle size can reduce powder costs
so that applications that were not economical before the
introduction of the Aerosion disintegrator may now be feasible.
The Aerosion disintegrator does not cut, mix or round materials
being reduced, as do some other reduction methods. Rather
energy is applied to the material and it shatters into small
particles. The sharp edges make the particles produced using
the Aerosion Disintegrator improves packing characteristics.
